A backyard wedding is perfect for couples who love to be outdoors, and want a unique feel for their big day. If you’re thinking about hosting your wedding and/ or reception in your backyard, or if your plans may have changed recently, we have some great tips for you!
This might seem like a small thing, but having complete freedom to choose a date that works best for you and your fiancé is actually a huge benefit of a backyard wedding! It’s also very helpful if you want to get married during peak wedding season when venues book up at least a year in advance..
– First pick the date, then start the rest of the planning –
Backyard weddings are a great way to save money on the venue space. When you decide to have a backyard wedding at your own home, or a family member’s or friend’s, you automatically slash your wedding budget dramatically. The question there is of course; Do you or your friends have a backyard big enough (and of course nice enough) for your wedding?
Answer: You must think about your guest list and about what type of reception you would like to have. A backyard wedding naturally tends to be more intimate than a wedding at a traditional venue, this is the perfect reason to keep your guest list better managed. Do you like a plated dinner or a buffet? A cocktail bar or grilled picnic food? Each type of reception comes with different choices, irrespective of how many guests you choose to have.
-Talk to a rental company or a catering company. They will know how much space you will need to set up tables, booths and of course the dancefloor where everybody will show there moves-
If you have at least a few weeks’ time, you should be ready to prep the backyard, this of course depends on how big your wedding will be. If you’re hosting a backyard wedding in the summer, great! Nature can take care of most of your décor costs – although you’re going to have to help it along. You’ll want to plan yard maintenance in advance to give plants time to fill out, space to be cleared and flowers to bloom.
-Talk to your wedding planner, rental company or caterer about the event layout before you do any work. You might even consider hiring a landscaper to take care of all the design and maintenance so it’s one less thing on your to-do list-
Whether you’re looking for an elegant wedding design, or a simple backyard wedding, your theme will drive most of the aesthetic decisions from here on out. Vintage? Rustic? Country? Every theme comes with different flowers, photo frames, chairs, linens, centerpieces, catering choices and more.
-First pick a theme, then pick your details and of course your Dream dress!-
Whether your backyard is small or huge, you’ll want to pay extra attention to where you set up your ceremony, and where you are going to place the dance floor. What’s a backyard wedding without a dance floor? We can already hear the YMCA through the speakers! Be kind to all those women in high heels and those poor blades of grass growing in the danger zone, and rent a dance floor for guests to use. It can also double-up as the staging area for the ceremony too!
-Large trees make the perfect ceremony backdrop and provide shade from harsh sunlight-
A huge benefit of a backyard wedding is that you can light up this space with as many (or as few) beautiful strands of lights as you could possible imagine, and you can begin the stringing as early as you need to, because nobody else is renting your event space. Twinkle lights, chandeliers or stringing lights throughout the ceiling of the tent, and wrapping them around the trees.
-To ensure you don’t blow a fuse or put the entire neighborhood at risk of an outage, rent generators to accommodate the extra power you’ll need. Check your caterer to find out what equipment they’ll be using and the DJ to find out how much power their setup needs-
We recommend this: Rent a Tent! This will come in handy when the weather is not what you hoped, and it also provides you with much needed shelter from things as simple as too much sun or a light breeze. Think about your delicate decorations on the tables…
Rent your chairs and tables from a rental company or through your catering contact, who will either rent the equipment themselves or know with whom you should speak for to get the best styles for your budget and theme. When you rent it, you don’t have to worry about the setup or take down.
-Are you planning your wedding on the hottest day of the year? Consider renting equipment that will help cool down the setting and your loved ones. And the same when you’re planning a winter wedding.. Heat it up!-
It’s your backyard! There is nothing like saying “I do” in the backyard where you played hide and seek as a child or learned how to ride a bike. The sentimental factor can’t be recreated at any other venue and shouldn’t be underestimated. Think about the intimate details that fit perfectly in your backyard and your setting. Hang pictures of you and the man of your dreams on the back of the chairs, show your engagement photos or photo’s of your lovely one year old who just started walking. Let people know that it’s your wedding!
-A note to all the brides who love animals; A backyard wedding also gives you the perfect excuse to include your cute labradoodle in your big day!-
With an outdoor or backyard wedding, you get to host entertainment and games the way you want! For the kids, set up a cricket game or a version of hide and seek, or other games that they would really like to play. Guests can play while they wait for you to finish your photoshoot or while they are enjoying the cocktail bar with the cute waiter behind it. As long as the sun is still out and the music is not moonwalk dance-material, your guests will be looking for something to do.
-Take a good look at your guest list and check how many children will be at the wedding, and plan the games around these children-
A photographer who makes the most romantic and original video’s. What do you think of hiring a videographer, renting a photo booth, setting up a photo or video guest book? There are many options to never forget the best day of your life!
-Let your guests make the original photo’s and provide them with funny accessories. You will be amazed about the result-
And don’t forget your wedding dress! With a backyard wedding, you have so many choices of wedding dresses! Go wild! Anything can work! Don’t limit yourself!
